I have worked on numerous website redesign projects but below are 2 that I’m especially proud of.
Intercountry Adoption Australia
I was contracted by Intercountry Adoption Australia, a program of the Department of Social Services, to redesign all of the content within their website, while maintaining the basic IA and design of the website.
The first thing I did was complete a content audit to learn:
- what content was on the website
- how the pages were linked
- what the most viewed pages were.
I then developed a content template used to create the content, metadata and publishing instructions for handover to third-party publishers for publishing. This template had to be very robust as there were numerous rounds of approvals before publication.
Project successes
This project resulted in a website that was much easier to read and followed content patterns across all countries a user can adopt from. This means that the same headings were used in the same order across all 13 partner country pages. I also developed a ‘who can adopt’ box at the top of the page, so users can see at a glance if they met the eligibility criteria to adopt from that country. Previously this information was buried within the content under different headings.
These small changes saw a significant drop in queries from people asking about eligibility to adopt as the information was now easy to find and easy to read.
Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources
I was contracted by the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources to write content for programs that had previously had their own website but now had to become part of industry.gov.au. This included:
Working with an existing content audit and Google Analytics I worked out what was the key information for the audience and the best way to structure this, now that each program no longer had their own website and IA. This was also an opportunity to write content that meets the Australian Style Manual and WCAG.
Project successes
This project involved a lot of teaching subject matter experts the importance of the Australian Style Manual and WCAG to meet both government and user needs. Pair writing was also done to ensure that whilst we met content and accessibility standards we were also meeting the nuances of each of the programs.
Content patterns were created to ensure that there was consistency across all pages.
